In the recent years, the quantity of available information has increased exponentially for third parties.
Within any company, the information to be processed exceeds by far the human capabilities (Farhoomand & Drury 2002).
This generates a significant decrease in efficiency and thus, in productivity. In addition, the surplus of information generates stress and brings the risk of taking hasty decisions.
For instance, according to Le Monde magazine (June 16th 2009), stress constantly costs France between two and three percent of its GDP.
The surplus of information is nevertheless generated not only by a large quantity of data, but also by the lack of time to organize this data, by the redundancy of data sources and by informational noise.

Until recently, stress at work has been considered as the result of personal disorder.
A study was led (Farhoomand & Drury 2002) in which 124 experienced managers from different environments (industry, finance, services, transportation, government agencies) and several countries were interviewed.
